The FQS setting should be matched to the fuel quality that is used in the engine. Different fuels have different properties, such as density, viscosity, cetane number, sulfur content and lubricity. These properties affect the combustion process and the formation of deposits in the engine. If the FQS setting is too high or too low for the fuel quality, it can cause problems such as poor combustion, smoke, knocking, overheating, excessive wear and damage to the engine components.
To set the FQS for a 2 stroke marine diesel engine, one needs to follow these steps:
1. Check the fuel quality specifications from the fuel supplier and compare them with the engine manufacturer’s recommendations. If the fuel quality is within the acceptable range, proceed to step 2. If not, either change the fuel or contact the engine manufacturer for advice.
2. Start the engine and let it run at idle speed until it reaches normal operating temperature. Check the exhaust gas temperature and pressure at each cylinder and record them.
3. Increase the engine speed to a specified load point (e.g., 75% of maximum continuous rating) and check the exhaust gas temperature and pressure again at each cylinder. Record them and calculate the difference between idle and load values for each cylinder.
4. Compare the differences with the reference values provided by the engine manufacturer. If they are within the tolerance range, no adjustment is needed. If not, adjust the FQS setting by turning the cam on the fuel pump clockwise or counterclockwise until the differences are within the tolerance range. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all cylinders are adjusted.
5. After adjusting all cylinders, run the engine at full load for a few minutes and check for any abnormal signs such as smoke, knocking or vibration. If everything is normal, stop the engine and record the final FQS setting for each cylinder.
