The USCG’s headquarters has changed its location several times over its history. It was first established in 1915, when the Revenue Cutter Service and the Life-Saving Service merged to form the Coast Guard. The headquarters was initially located in the Treasury Building in downtown Washington, DC. In 1939, it moved to a new building on Constitution Avenue, near the Lincoln Memorial. In 1967, it relocated to Buzzard Point, a peninsula on the Anacostia River near Nationals Park. In 2013, it moved to its current location on the campus of St. Elizabeths Hospital in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, DC.
The USCG’s headquarters is led by the Commandant of the Coast Guard, who is the highest-ranking officer and the chief executive officer of the USCG. The current Commandant is Admiral Karl L. Schultz, who assumed office in June 2018. The Commandant is assisted by several deputy commandants and assistant commandants who oversee various operational and support functions such as operations, mission support, human resources, engineering and logistics, intelligence and criminal investigations, legal services, public affairs, and civil rights.

The USCG’s headquarters is not open to the general public, but visitors can request a pass by contacting the Historian’s Office at least five business days prior to their proposed visit. The Historian’s Office is responsible for preserving and promoting the history and heritage of the USCG. It maintains a collection of artifacts, documents, photographs, and publications that illustrate the USCG’s rich history and culture.
