In a process to reduce carbon emissions by cutting down the consumption of heavy fuel oil, MSC which is 2nd largest carrier in the shipping world has taken a step ahead. Air Lubrication system for 30 vessels of their fleet was ordered from UK Based maker Silverstream technologies. As per the experts of the industry, this technology gives around 10% reduction in the fuel consumption.
Air Lubrication Technology uses air bubbles to create a carpet between water and hull of the ship. Usually ships are installed with separate high pressure air system which supplies air below the hull. Due to presence of air, the resistance is said to be decreased, thus the load on the propulsion system reduces and so does the fuel consumption.
