Maersk suspends 5 Crew Members amid Rape charges

Recently Maersk suspended 5 crew members in connection with allegations related to rape and sexual harassment of a female cadet at sea. According to the blog post by the female cadet, it is not only her but several woman cadet have suffered similarly and this is one of the dark side of shipping industry which shouts for a gender equality. The shipping giant has started a top level investigation into this case. Crew remain suspended till investigation is over.

Female cadet wrote in her blog, that she was constantly being sexually harassed at sea for several weeks. One night her senior colleagues forced her and the fellow male cadet to drink hard alcohol, later they took her to cabin. She couldn’t remember what happened after that as she was fully drunk. In the morning when she woke up, she saw blood stains on the bed sheet and her body was sore.

I was in a state of total shock. For at least 20 minutes I sat there on my bed just looking at everything, looking at the scene, looking at my wet clothes, trying to piece together a timeline, and trying to process the fact that I had actually been raped. I was completely terrified.

Later her senior colleagues told her to stay silent and not to tell anyone about what just happened. She had to work with same people for 2 months, before returning to the academy where she decided to convey what wrong has been done.
