One can absolutely say that the incinerator is like a boiler and the only difference is that in this machinery we do not generate the steam.
Construction of Incinerator
What is an incinerator? It is like a waste recycling unit. Like boiler here too we have the rounded shell in which the combustion process is carried out.We have the drum in which we put the garbage and we have the proper bags in which all the garbage is put in and then put into the incinerator.
There are two types of burners which are namely pilot burner, main burner. The furnace is lined by the refractory lining and this lining protects the heat getting out of the incinerator and hurting someone. A lid or you can say flap is there and its main function is to keep the flame inside. There are special incinerators for the burning the plastic and glass waste. So, this was the only thing in the construction segment, let’s move towards the working part of the incinerator.
Working procedures of incinerator
What is an incineration? When working with the incinerator, one has to be very careful as this is a machine in which fire is lighted. A person has to be sound enough to operate this type of machinery. Before operating this machinery, one has to be sound about the starting procedure of the incinerator.
First of all when you are starting the incinerator working, you have to purge the system. Purging means removing a burnt gas or other type flue gases which may have left due to the incomplete combustion took place last time operation of the incinerator. After purging operation, you have to put the garbage like oily rags in a bag which are on board ship and should be put into the incinerator.
Now, pilot burner is to be lighted first as it will assist the main burner in firing by creating a suitable temperature inside the furnace. The pilot and main burner are being provided with compressed air supply as this helps in the complete atomization of fuel which assists in the proper burning of the fuel. After a certain time the pilot burner is switched off and main burner is fired.
Main burner is provided with a waste oil supply which we get form oily water separator or any type of oil which may have been contaminated. So, this helps us to get rid of the waste oil being generated on board ship. Now when all sewage products are burned, the burner is switched off and the byproducts of combustion are allowed to be cooled down.
This cooled down products are then collected in bags and they can be thrown into the seas or can be given to the shore reception facility. Usually the ash of the paper, cloths etc. is thrown into the seas and the ash of the plastic arts are given to the shore reception facility. But in recent updated in the Marpol, any type of disposal of ash into sea is prohibited and they can only be given to the shore reception facility.
