Accommodation Regulations for Seafarers as Per Maritime Labor Convention

MLC or Maritime Labor Convention is already effective. MLC sets standards for the seafarers regarding their onboard living conditions, wages, food etc.  In this article we will discuss about the recent regulations regarding the accommodations for the seafarers, when they are onboard. To simplify the understanding, we will try to keep it as simple as possible.

Maritime Labor Convention Regulations Accommodation Regulations (Merchant Vessels)

1)   The minimum floor area should not be less than 5.5 square meters for ships less than 10000 GRT and 7 square meters for ships more than 10000 Grt.
For officers, the minimum floor area for a ships less than 10000 grt be 8.5 square meters and 10 square meters for a ship above 10000 GRT.
2)   All ships above 3000 GRT should provide, separate sleeping rooms.

3)   Minimum head Clarence should not be less than 203 meters. The bed should be separate, with minimum dimensions of 198 cm X 80 cm.
5)    For senior officers like Captain, Chief Engineer, 2nd Engineer and Chief Officer, there should additional sitting apart from the bed room.
8) Adequate supply of clean water for bathing and other purposes. Access to hot water and cool water.
9) Proper air conditioning and heating arrangements for accommodation must be provided.
10) Clean towels, bed sheets etc will be provided by the vessel management.

Accommodation Regulations (Passenger Vessels)

1)   Head Room should not be less than 203 meters.
2)  Separate bed for each occupant, having dimensions not less than 198 X 80 cm.
3)  4.5 square meters minimum area for a room with a single berthing.
4)  Two or three seafarers may be allowed in single room, only when above Maritime Labor Convention Regulations
are met.
5)   Minimum floor area for junior officers needs to be 7.5 meters and for senior officers it needs to be 8.5 meters.
6)  Separate sitting rooms for senior officers.
7)   7.5 Square meter floor area for 2 persons room, 11.5 square meters for 3 persons room and 14.5 square meters floor area for four person room
Note: Special Purpose
Ships, Ships below 3000 GRT and Below 200 GT, regulations are little different
and have not been discussed here.Point 8, 9 and 10 mentioned above also applies to passenger vessels too.

So this was the basic regulations that your need to be aware about. While most of the ships operators comply with the standards given above, some of them might not be.

    What about crew? there are more of them than officers or are you anti crew like most companies who just exploit lower qualified crew. there is more to life than being an officer who thinks the world is about them only.

    Well this article looks same for all crew and officers. Only thing is that there is some additional provisions for senior officers. And merchant navy is all about crew and officers. None can't sail the vessel alone.
