Types of Fire Extinguishers used on board ship

This article deals with the knowledge of type of fire extinguishers that are used on board ship. This is the first in the series called as the ‘Portable Firefighting Equipment’ that are used in board ship. There are mainly four types of portable fire extinguishers used on board ship.

In this article you will get to know about the technical specification of the various fire extinguishers that are used on board ship. All explanations are given with the help of diagrams to make things more clear to the readers. Let’s have a look at these equipments.

Type of Fire Extinguishers used on board ship

There are mainly four types of fire extinguishers used on board ship namely:
1) Water type
2) Foam type
3) Dry chemical powder type
4) Co2 TypeAccording to the International Maritime Organization, the weight of the portable fire fighting equipment need not be more then the 23 Kg and every manufacturer need to compliance with these standards. Let’s discuss them in detail.

Water Type Fire Extinguishers

Capacity of this Equipment is around 9 litres and mainly contains water only.

Material used to put off fire: Water
These types of fire extinguishers last for around 60 sec only but can depend on the pressure of gas filled in it. CO2 gas is used for pushing water out of the cylinder and it is filled in 60 grams quantity. The quantities of gas can change as per the size of the equipment. The pressure inside it is around 10 bars and it is enough to expel water out of the equipment with great force.

This equipment only takes 4 to 5 sec to start and once started it last long for 1 minute duration. Generally these types of equipments are used to tackle the class A type of fires. This fire extinguisher used the Cooling method to stop the fire. They are always marked in ‘red color’ and this provides distinction to them. They are usually used in the accommodations spaces.

Foam Type Fire Extinguishers

Capacity of this Equipment is around 9 litres and mainly contains mixture of foam and water.

Material used to put off fire: 8.7 litres of water and .27 litres of AFFF
These types of fire extinguishers last for around 60 sec only but can depend on the pressure of gas filled in it. CO2 gas is used for pushing water out of the cylinder and it is filled in 60 grams quantity. The quantities of gas can change as per the size of the equipment. The pressure inside it is around 10 bars and it is enough to expel water and foam mixture out of the equipment with great force.

This equipment only takes 4 to 5 sec to start and once started it last long for 1 minute duration. Generally these types of equipments are used to tackle the class B type of fires. This fire extinguisher used the Smothering method to stop the fire. They are always marked in ‘cream color’ and this provides distinction to them. They are usually used in the galley and engine roam spaces.

Dry Chemical Powder Type Fire Extinguishers

Capacity of this Equipment is around 6/10 Kgs and mainly contains Dry Chemical powder.

Material used to put off fire: NaHCO3 (Dry Chemical Powder)
These types of fire extinguishers last for around 20 sec only but can depend on the pressure of gas filled in it. CO2 gas is used for pushing water out of the cylinder and it is filled in 120 grams quantity. The quantities of gas can change as per the size of the equipment. The pressure inside it is around 10 bars and it is enough to expel dry chemical powder out of the equipment with great force.

This equipment only takes 4 to 5 sec to start and once started it last long for .20 minute duration. Generally these types of equipments are used to tackle the class B and C type of fires. This fire extinguisher used the inhibition method to stop the fire. They are always marked in ‘blue color’ and this provides distinction to them. They are usually used in the galley and engine roam spaces.

CO2 Type Fire Extinguishers

Capacity of this Equipment is around 6/10 Kgs and mainly contains carbon dioxide gas.

Material used to put off fire: Carbon Di oxide gas.

These types of fire extinguishers last for around 20 sec only but can depend on the pressure of gas filled in it. The quantities of gas can change as per the size of the equipment. The pressure inside it is around 10 bars. This equipment only takes 4 to 5 sec to start and once started it last long for .20 minute duration. Generally these types of equipments are used to tackle the class B and C type of fires. This fire extinguisher used the inhibition method to stop the fire. They are always marked in ‘Black’ and this provides distinction to them. They are usually used in the galley, Bridge and engine roam spaces.
